Charles Louis Janssens came from a family that had fought for France under Napoleon and in World War I. Charles himself served in the Belgian Underground against the Nazi occupation in World War II and after liberation he worked with the U.S. Army as an intelligence officer. After the war, Charles came to the United States, became a citizen, received a PhD, got married, and then got divorced. Subsequently, he married an Iranian, moved to Iran and worked in academia until the Iranian Revolution of 1978. Thereafter, he returned to the United States and lived out his remaining days. These memoirs are based mainly on a booklet that Charles wrote about his life experiences for his eldest son, and to a lesser extent on letters that he wrote from Iran and then later upon his return to the United States. It contains both exciting action, and fatherly advice.
