In “Conversations with Mike Milken,” the acclaimed financier and philanthropist hosts wide-ranging interviews with global leaders across a variety of industries and sectors. Launched during the early days of the coronavirus crisis, the interviews reflect real-time decisions and thought processes. As the world changed over the course of this series, so too did the discussion topics: protecting workforces and maintaining supply chains; racial equality and criminal justice; and maintaining health security while preventing unemployment and economic calamity; and more. In his introduction to Volume 1, Milken explains the genesis of this interview series in February and March 2020:“Each of the 10 centers of the Milken Institute, along with our medical and family foundations, redirected their efforts to work on various challenges created by the novel coronavirus. Our strategy, still in place today, focused on six areas: education, prevention, testing, treatments, controls/cures, and financial safety nets. … “My time was spent talking to CEOs, government officials, university deans, directors of academic research centers, physicians and research scientists, philanthropists and others – all in an effort to help bring answers to this fast-moving global health crisis. “These conversations were in very sharp contrast with what we were reading in the papers and seeing on TV and the internet. There, the energy and attention was on forecasting how many million people would die. Historically, such predictions often turn out to be wrong because individuals and organizations step forth to prevent the worst-case scenarios from becoming reality. That has always been our focus as well, so we avoided the crowded marketplace of case modeling. … “We were talking to hundreds of individuals who were coming at this crisis from as many different perspectives, and so we developed rapid expertise and became a clearinghouse of data and ideas, frequently connecting individuals who could help and learn from each other. “The impetus for this interview series – launched as a podcast and now accumulated and re-edited as a book series – was simple: we’re having these conversations, and everyone should have access to learn alongside us.”Volume 1 guests include:•James Allison, Nobel laureate•Steve Ballmer, former CEO, Microsoft•David Baltimore, Nobel laureate•Gene Block, Chancellor, UCLA•Adam Boehler, CEO, U.S. International Development Finance Corporation•Robert Bradway, CEO, Amgen•Bruce Broussard, CEO, Humana•Francis Collins, Director, National Institutes of Health •Roger Crandall, CEO, MassMutual•Ray Dalio, Founder, Bridgewater Associates•Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO, Gates Foundation•Carmine Di Sibio, CEO, EY•Judy Faulkner, CEO, Epic•Alex Gorsky, CEO, Johnson & Johnson •Thomas Gottstein, CEO, Credit Suisse•Margaret Hamburg, former FDA Commissioner•Richard Hatchett, CEO, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations•Rod Hochman, CEO, Providence St. Joseph; Chair-Elect, Amer.
