Crises are like weather patterns; sometimes we know they are coming, and other times they catch us by surprise. Imagine being a captain of a boat in the middle of a large body of water when a storm comes upon you. How do you react or respond? How do you lead the crew and navigate the boat through the storm? In short, this describes crisis leadership. Sometimes we know a crisis is coming, and other times a crisis arises out of nowhere. Crisis leadership differs significantly from normal, everyday leadership. Leadership in times of calm and peace doesn’t necessarily translate into good leadership in times of chaos and crisis. In The Life of Reason philosopher George Santyana famously warned, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” History reminds us there will be wars, natural disasters, pandemics, economic recessions, disruptive technologies, shifts in human behaviors, and more. Given the ebb and flow of crises that arise, it is imperative that Christian leaders be prepared to lead in, through, and out of every crisis.While none of us seeks a crisis, we know they will come. As leaders, we want to be prepared to lead well for the glory of God and the good of others. About the Authors:Ed Stetzer, PhD, holds the Billy Graham Distinguished Chair for Church, Mission, and Evangelism at Wheaton College and is the dean of the School of Mission, Ministry, and Leadership at Wheaton College. He also serves as the executive director of the Wheaton College Billy Graham Center. Stetzer is a prolific author and a well-known conference speaker. He has planted, revitalized, and pastored churches; trained pastors and church planters on six continents; holds two master's degrees and two doctorates; and has written or cowritten more than a dozen books and hundreds of articles. Josh Laxton, PhD, serves as the Assistant Director for both the Wheaton College Billy Graham Center as well as Lausanne North America. He has served the local church in various capacities over the past two decades including planting, replanting, and revitalizing churches. He currently serves part-time as the Young Adult/Teaching Pastor at Wheaton Bible Church in West Chicago, IL. He writes frequently for The Exchange on Christianity Today, Outreach, and NewChurches.
